After rain cancelled games, Marble Falls youth football ready to play again

The Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer teams are traveling to Wimberley Saturday, Sept. 23, with the aim of playing six contests as part of the Hill Country Youth League.
The Mustangs’ contests start at 9 a.m. with the freshmen (first and second grade), junior varsities (third and fourth grade), fifth-graders and sixth graders all scheduled to play.
Though rain forced officials to cancel contests scheduled to be played Sept. 16, association president Nicholas Wood pointed out the Marble Falls teams are enjoying a great start to the 2023 season. That was evident during games played at Jarrell Sept. 9.
The Marble Falls freshman purple squad crushed Jarrell 36-0, while the Marble Falls junior varsity purple team stomped Lago Vista 36-6 and the Marble Falls junior varsity gold squad defeated Jarrell 12-6. The Marble Falls fifth- and sixth-graders shut out Jarrell. The fifth graders won 14-0 and the sixth-graders were victorious 19-0. Lago Vista slipped by the Marble Falls freshman gold team 27-25.
“We have multiple teams at 2-0,” Wood said. “Our participation levels are high.”
The president pointed out Jarrell had some players who weighed more than 100 pounds and may have had more than Marble Falls had on its fifth and sixth-grade teams. But coaches emphasize making plays and being unafraid to perform the way they’re coached, and the results will take care of themselves, he said. A lot of that, he added, is the result of precise evaluation of how each Mustang can best contribute to the team’s overall success.
“We put both hands in the dirt and go and ball out and beat you,” Wood said.
He noted each team utilizes the Slot-T offense, the same scheme used by the Marble Falls Independent School District football program, and players are showing they are learning it. The older players, who’ve played in the league for awhile, are displaying a good grasp of the playbook. That’s being reflected on the scoreboard.
“You have to go out and get after somebody,” Wood said. “We’re one of the few teams that will run to the ball and tackle you.”
He noted coaches of opponents are seeing it, too.
“The best compliment I got came from Fredericksburg,” he said. “He said, ‘Y’all’s programs is the best across board.’ Our kids are still so aggressive.”
